The project is in a unique location on the southern coast of Phuket.
Hidden away in a forgotten lane on a gently rolling Rawai hillside, the site cannot be found until you
are already standing on it, and this unusual approach presents some unique challenges to the
designer. On a typical site the buildings are seen from far away as you approach, and the Architect
can make a visual statement that identifies the character of development long before the visitor
arrives.
Guests arriving at a hotel that looks stunning from a the distance will be a lot more accommodating
of inappropriate close‐up details in design, as they will have already formed their opinions. We have
to make a very quick last minute impression on the visitor as the first impression they have will be
standing in the lobby.
It would be easy to allow guests to arrive at the ‘back’ of the building, but even if It is ‘dressed up’ it
is very hard to achieve that ambiance that encourages one to explore further when you can’t use
your aces (the terraces, pool, bars & lounges) to make the introduction. For this reason we guide
arrivals around the building to the front, discreetly hiding the car parking by making use of the
gentle slope and developing a half‐basement. From here the presence of the pool & terraces are
clear, the weir edge to the pool becomes a waterfall on the wall above your head as you approach
